VISToday Newsletter
July 2010
*******************************************************************
From The Desk Of Roy!

I am in Yosemite today and wanted to send out my July Newsletter concerning the
economy.  The economy seems to still be affecting the medical industry, but like I
always say, the medical field is not going anywhere, Hospitals will always need staff to
cover shifts.

How is the economy in 2010 affecting Medical Staffing?

I received an email the other day asking me what I see happening in the medical
staffing industry in 2010?

Well, I must say that Hospitals seemed to have been doing fine till the beginning of
2009.  This year many hospitals began to feel the crunch of the response to the
recession.  Hospitals began to do several things in response to what was happening in
the nation.

1. Hospitals slowed down hiring
2. Hospitals began to use less staffing agencies.
3. Hospitals began to cut staff.
4. Hospitals began to run leaner.

These where in response to the idea of the recession and not actual action.

Let me explain!

What I have seen is similar to what happened to me when my wife got pregnant for the
first time.  She began to gain weight and I somehow began to gain weight as well.  I
think they call this "Sympathy weight gain".  OK, let me go on, I will explain how this
relates to what I am trying to explain.

Hospitals in response to what was happening in the nation felt a need to respond to the
aches and pains by following suit.  I will be honest with you, I always have said that the
medical field is in reverse relation to the economy.  But, what happened to many
Hospitals was sort of like what happened to me when my wife got pregnant "Sympathy"
running lean.  Many Hospitals did not need to run lean. How do I know this?

There are some Hospitals that run almost exclusively on Government funded money.
People on Government social programs can continue to visit the Hospitals and are not
reliant on if they have a job or not.  But, these type of Hospitals began to do either one
or all four of my list above.  Wow! I could not believe it.

I knew that this was not normal for many Hospitals and because of that I knew it would
not last.  2010 is starting to get better and that is how I am able to tell my clients that
this is the best time to get into the staffing service.

Why?  The opportunity to get into a Hospitals and provide staff is probably easier today
that when I was working as a business development employee.

How? OK, think about it!

1. Less competition.
2. More employees available

You will find that Hospitals that where to quick to stop using staffing agencies will very
soon begin to realize that they need to have staff.  Also, those employees that lost work
will never again only work for one facility, the idea of loosing a job and no having
anything as a backup will be just enough of a reason to work for a staffing agency.

Its all the psychology of staffing, its all about the masses working in conjunction of
predictability.  I have seen this before and I will continue seeing this in the future.  This
is what has helped me staff in the consulting business and this is how I am able to help
my clients.

I know this is a short newsletter, but I felt it important enough to write this email form my
hotel in Yosemite.  No, I did not camp, but I will consider it next year.
